Ο Άλεξ Χόνολντ γίνεται ο πρώτος αναρριχητής που κατακτά την κορυφή του βράχου EL Capitan με ύψος 915 μέτρα, χωρίς ιμάντες, σχοινιά ή κάποιο εξοπλισμό ασφαλείας. Το "Free Solo" δεν καταγράφει απλά την συγκλονιστική διαδρομή προς τα πάνω αλλά επιχειρεί να καταλάβει τι ώθησε τον Χόνολντ να κάνει κάτι τόσο παράτολμο και επικίνδυνο.
