Τον Γενάρη του 2013, η Λόρα Ποΐτρας άρχισε να παραλαμβάνει ανώνυμα μέιλ από τον «πολίτη τέσσερα», που ισχυρίζονταν ότι έχει αποδείξεις για ένα παράνομο σύστημα παρακολούθησης υπό την αιγίδα της NSA σε συνεργασία με άλλες κατασκοπικές υπηρεσίες ανά τον πλανήτη. Πέντε μήνες αργότερα, η Ποΐτρας ταξίδεψε μαζί με δύο συνεργάτες της στο Χονγκ Κονγκ για την πρώτη από τις πολλές συναντήσεις με αυτό τον άντρα, που αποκαλύφθηκε ότι ήταν ο Έντουαρντ Σνόουντεν.
