Brazil

Film · 1985

Low-level bureaucrat Sam Lowry escapes the monotony of his day-to-day life through a recurring daydream of himself as a virtuous hero saving a beautiful damsel. Investigating a case that led to the wrongful arrest and eventual death of an innocent man instead of wanted terrorist Harry Tuttle, he meets the woman from his daydream, and in trying to help her gets caught in a web of mistaken identities, mindless bureaucracy and lies.

The sides of Brazil

  • A clerk lost in endless paperwork
  • Daydreams of flying in armour
  • Robert De Niro as a rogue heating engineer

Brazil is good for you if…

  • you like Terry Gilliam's surreal, crowded world of ducts and forms.
  • you like laughing at a state that kills by clerical error.
  • you like retro machines and giant pipes in every frame.

Brazil is bad for you if…

  • you need a hopeful ending.
  • two hours and twenty minutes is too much for you.
