Learn how Ipsomap works

Before you sign up

Is this a movie tracker or a TV show tracker?
Both — movie tracking and TV show tracking in one collection. Movies, TV shows, documentaries and anime each carry a status — watched, watching, dropped, or want to watch — plus your rating and your note.
Does it track individual episodes?
No. A series is one entry with a status, not a checklist of 62 episodes. Ipsomap is built to learn what you like, and ticking season 3 episode 7 says far less about your taste than a rating and a line on what you thought of the show.
Is there a mobile app?
Yes — Ipsomap is on Google Play for Android. On iPhone and on desktop it runs in the browser and installs to your home screen from there. Same account either way, so what you log on a phone is there on a laptop.
I'm coming from Letterboxd, Trakt or TV Time. What moves over?
Your titles, your ratings and your own review text, from any export those apps give you — Claude reads the file rather than an API, so the format doesn't matter. What doesn't move: followers and social activity, which this doesn't have, and episode-level ticks, which it doesn't keep.
Can I use it as a film diary?
Yes — a rating and a note on every title, kept with the date. The difference is that the diary gets read back to you: it is what the taste profile and the recommendations are built from.
How is this different from a watchlist app?
A watchlist stores decisions you already made. This one makes them. There is a watchlist — capped at 20 on purpose, a shortlist you'll finish rather than a graveyard of 300.
How many titles before the recommendations work?
Five rated titles unlocks them. One import clears that in a single paste; typing five in by hand takes about a minute.
Is it really free?
Yes. The free account covers tracking, importing your history, your taste profile and recommendations. Premium buys higher limits — it is not a gate on the basics.
Do I need a card?
No. Nothing asks for payment details until you choose to start a Premium trial.
Who can read what I watch?
Nobody but you. There is no public profile and nothing is shared. With encryption on, what we store can only be unlocked by your passphrase.
How AI recommendations work
Ipsomap uses Claude AI to suggest movies and series based on your taste profile. Your profile is built automatically as you add and rate watches — no setup required. The more you log, the better your picks. Ask for recommendations using natural language — for example "something slow-paced for tonight" or "a thriller like Black Mirror".
Understanding taste insights
Taste insights are AI-generated summaries of your viewing patterns. They capture genre preferences, pacing tolerance, narrative style, and what makes a performance compelling to you. Insights are created automatically in the background as you add and rate watches — the Insights tab is where you can read them.
How to import your watch history
Go to Settings → Import and paste any list — a Letterboxd CSV, a Netflix export, a blog post, a screenshot of your streaming queue, a PDF, or just free text. The AI reads it, extracts every title it finds, matches them against TMDB, and lets you review before anything is saved. Ambiguous titles get flagged so you can pick the right one.
Importing from Letterboxd
On Letterboxd, go to Settings → Import & Export and click Export your data. You get a ZIP. In Ipsomap, open Settings → Import and drop that ZIP in the Letterboxd section, without unzipping it. Your ratings (converted to a 10-point scale), reviews word for word, rewatches and watchlist are imported. It uses no AI and no credits. Films with the same title and year ask you to pick; the rest is matched automatically. When it's done, you land on your taste profile.
What encryption does and when to enable it
When encryption is enabled, your watches, notes, and AI insights are stored as ciphertext — even Ipsomap cannot read them without your passphrase. Enable it in Settings → Encryption for full privacy. You will need to enter your passphrase on each new device. Losing both your passphrase and recovery key means your data cannot be recovered.
Privacy and your data (GDPR)
Your data is stored in the EU. You can export or permanently delete your data at any time from Settings → Data. AI processing happens server-side but your data is never stored by the AI provider. See our Privacy Policy for the full picture.
